GENERAL FACTS.

Geographical: The Canary Islands are made up of seven large islands and six smaller isles. Its northern area is located at 29º and 25´ north and its southern area, at 27ºand 38´ north. Its maximum altitude is 3.718 metres ( Summit of the Teide, on the island of Tenerife).

Political: It is an autonomous community of Spain, completely integrated into the European Union, so the immigration and customs laws of the European Union apply here. The archipelago features its own economical and fiscal regime, full of advantages for those enterprises established in this area. It is made up of 87 municipalities.

Extension: The total surface area is of 7.446 square kilometres, with 1.114 kilometres of coastline and 257 kilometres of beaches.

Demographic facts: A total of 1.915.540 inhabitants (year 2004), with a medium density of 257 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Languages: Spanish is the official language, although in the tourist area much English and German is spoken.

Annual mean temperature: 22º C / 71.6º F.

Infrastructures: 8 airports and 41 seaports, among them sports seaports, marinas and fishing docks.

Environmental facts: The Canary Islands houses four national parks, 141 natural protected spaces and four biosphere reserves. There are a total of 1,386 native species and 540 endemic species.
